In 1961, segregation seemed to have an overwhelming grip on American Society That is, until an integrated band of college students decided, en masse, to risk everything and buy a ticket on a Greyhound bus bound for the Deep South. They called themselves the Freedom Riders and they managed to bring the president and the entire American public face to face with the challenge of correcting civil-rights inequities that plagued the nation.

Oscar-shortlist selection, The Loving Story, the debut feature by Full Frame Documentary Film Festival founder Nancy Buirsky, is the definitive account of Loving v. Virigina - the landmark 1967 Supreme Court decision that legalized interracial marriage. 

Married in Washington, D.C. in 1958, the Lovings returned home to Virginia where their marriage was declared illegal -- he was white, she was black and Native American. Newly discovered 16 mm footage of the Lovings and their lawyers, testimony of their daughter, and images by LIFE Magazine photographer Grey Villet, takes us behind the scenes of the legal challenges and emotional turmoil and documents a seminal moment in history and a personal, human love story.

30 million years ago more than 5,500 cubic kilometers of magma erupted during a one-week period near a place called Wah Wah Springs. By comparison, this eruption was about 5,000 times larger than the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption. Today, researchers at BYU  are studying 13,000 feet of volcanic rock to understand the catastrophic eruptions from 30 million years ago.  Join Dr. Eric Christiansen, one of the BYU professors leading this research, and he shares the astonishing scale of the supervolcano in our own back yard.

About the City of Orem Library

The Orem Library is open Monday through Friday 9am until 9pm and on Saturdays from 9am until 6pm. We are closed Sundays and Holidays. Click here for a list of observed holidays.

If you need to return books outside of these hours, a 24-hour drive through book and media drop is located on the North side of the Library.

We are located at 58 North State Street in Orem, Utah at the north end of the City Center Complex (on the northeast corner of State and Center Streets). Parking is to the east of the library building and is accessed from 100 North. If you need assistance please call 229-7050.
